There are destinations that stand out for their landscapes. Others for their history.\nDark Sky\u00ae Alqueva stands out for something rarer: the ability to transform the night sky into a tourism asset of excellence, recognised on a global scale. <\/p>\n

This journey began with a defining milestone: the distinction awarded by UN Tourism in 2013, which positioned Alqueva as an international example of sustainable tourism in a rural environment. This recognition not only validated a pioneering vision, but also paved the way for the affirmation of a destination where science, nature and authenticity intersect in a unique way. <\/p>\n

From that moment onwards, growth has been steady and consistent. Dark Sky\u00ae Alqueva has been repeatedly recognised on the most prestigious international stages, with particular emphasis on the World Travel Awards, widely regarded as the \u201cOscars of Tourism\u201d. <\/p>\n

By December 2025, the destination had accumulated more than 60 international awards, including sixteen<\/a><\/span><\/strong> World Travel Awards, consolidating a position of global leadership. In recent years, the distinctions received in 2024 and 2025 have further reinforced this status, recognising Dark Sky\u00ae Alqueva in the most relevant international categories related to sustainable tourism, responsible tourism and innovative experiences, in an increasingly competitive global context. <\/p>\n

At the same time, this journey has been enriched by distinctions in the field of luxury tourism. The Luxury Travel Awards have strengthened the destination\u2019s positioning within the premium segment, highlighting the quality, attention to detail and exclusivity of the experiences offered under one of the purest skies in Europe. <\/p>\n

In the field of sustainability, the Green Awards have recognised the ongoing commitment to responsible practices and the preservation of the territory, emphasising the balance between tourism development and respect for the landscape and local communities.<\/p>\n

At a business and institutional level, recognition has also been extended through awards from the World Confederation of Businesses (WORLDCOB), including distinctions such as The Bizz and, more recently, Be a Legend 2025. These awards highlight not only the quality of the tourism offering, but also the strength of the project as a model of management, innovation and international impact. <\/p>\n

It is also important to underline that each of these awards and distinctions represents, for Dark Sky\u00ae Alqueva, not only an honour, but above all an increased responsibility. This responsibility is assumed by the creator of Dark Sky\u00ae Alqueva, by its Official Astrophotographer and by the Observatory Team, who ensure, on a daily basis, the quality, rigour and authenticity of the experience. This responsibility also extends to the Official Network of Partners, whose excellence in accommodation, gastronomy, retail and tourism activities contributes decisively to the consistency and international recognition of the destination. <\/p>\n

More than a succession of distinctions, this journey reflects the affirmation of a clear, strategic and long-term vision: the ability to interpret the night sky as an essential and highly differentiating resource, anticipating its tourism, scientific and territorial potential long before it became widely recognised. It was this vision, combined with consistent planning, on-the-ground implementation and the ability to see further, that made it possible to transform the sky into a structuring asset, creating an accessible, educational and deeply inspiring offering, with real impact and added value at multiple levels. <\/p>\n

Today, Dark Sky\u00ae Alqueva stands as one of the world\u2019s leading astrotourism destinations, a place where excellence is not occasional, but built over time, award after award, experience after experience.<\/p>\n
