Starlight Certification

Dark Sky® Alqueva – The World’s First Starlight Tourism Destination

Dark Sky® Alqueva was the first site in the world to receive the official certification as a Starlight Tourism Destination, awarded by the Starlight Foundation. This international certification is institutionally supported by UNESCO, UN Tourism (formerly the World Tourism Organization – UNWTO), and the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, globally recognized authorities in science, culture, and sustainable tourism.

Today, the Dark Sky® Alqueva territory includes municipalities in both Portugal and Spain, making it the world’s first Transboundary Starlight Destination, symbolically reinforcing that the night sky knows no administrative borders.

What Is a Starlight Tourism Destination?

A Starlight Tourism Destination is a region characterized by extremely low levels of light pollution, high atmospheric quality, and an active commitment to protecting the night sky. These locations provide exceptional conditions for astronomical observation and for the development of sustainable astrotourism.

In a European context where increasing light pollution prevents millions of people from clearly observing the Milky Way, Alqueva preserves high-quality night skies, allowing visitors to see our galaxy with the naked eye for much of the year.

A Territory of Environmental and Cultural Excellence

The certified area covers more than 10,000 km² around the Great Lake of Alqueva, including eleven Portuguese municipalities — Alandroal, Barrancos, Estremoz, Moura, Mourão, Redondo, Reguengos de Monsaraz, Portel, Évora, Mértola, and Serpa — as well as adjacent Spanish municipalities.

Beyond its outstanding sky quality, the region is distinguished by its rich natural and cultural heritage. Millennia-old megalithic monuments testify to the ancestral relationship between human communities and celestial cycles, creating a symbolic continuity between past and present in the contemplation of the cosmos.

The Official Dark Sky® Alqueva Partner Network includes rural tourism units and specialized operators who have adapted their services to meet the specific needs of astrotourism visitors, offering:

  • Flexible schedules compatible with nighttime activities
  • Late dinners or post-session suppers
  • Complementary experiences such as birdwatching, hiking, horseback riding, night canoeing, hot-air ballooning, yoga, children’s activities, and gastronomic experiencesExperiências complementares como observação de aves, caminhadas, passeios equestres, canoagem noturna, balonismo, yoga, atividades infantis e experiências gastronómicas

The region therefore provides an integrated offering that combines science, nature, culture, and well-being.

Dark Sky® Alqueva is managed by the Dark Sky® Association. The names Dark Sky®, Dark Sky Alqueva®, and Dark Sky Patrol® are registered trademarks protected within the European Union.

This is a territory where the preservation of the night sky is understood as an environmental, scientific, and cultural commitment, offering visitors an authentic experience under one of Europe’s darkest skies.

Technical Certification Criteria – Starlight Tourism Destination

The Starlight Tourism Destination certification requires compliance with rigorous sky quality parameters:

  • Clear nights (absence of clouds): more than 50% of the year
Dark Sky® Alqueva records an average of approximately 286 clear nights per year.
  • Sky brightness (darkness): > 21 mag/arcsec²
In certain locations, average measurements reach 21.60 mag/arcsec², consistent with high-quality dark skies.
  • Seeing: ≤ 3 arcseconds
An indicator of atmospheric stability and the sharpness of telescopic images. Dark Sky® Alqueva was certified according to the criteria used in 2011, which established a value of ≤ 2 arcseconds.
  • Transparency (NELM): naked-eye limiting magnitude close to 6
Allowing the observation of faint stars under ideal conditions.

These parameters position Dark Sky® Alqueva among the European regions with the highest night sky quality.

The Starlight Foundation

The Starlight Foundation was established following the Starlight Initiative, launched in 2007 at the proposal of the Instituto de Astrofísica de Canarias, with the support of international organizations.

Its mission focuses on defending the universal right to observe the stars and promoting the night sky as scientific, cultural, environmental, and tourism heritage. Its main objectives include:

  • The promotion and dissemination of science, particularly astrophysics
  • The development of astrotourism as a bridge between science and society
  • Training programs for guides and science communicators
  • International cooperation in the protection and defense of the night sky
