At Dark Sky®, we believe that the quality of every experience begins with the people who make it possible. We are looking for responsible, dynamic and motivated professionals to join a team dedicated to protecting and promoting the night sky, communicating science and creating unique experiences.

The usual place of work will be the Official Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory, located in Cumeada, in the municipality of Reguengos de Monsaraz. However, some sessions, activities and events may take place at other locations, depending on the programme and the requests received.

We are currently recruiting for two different roles:

Dark Sky® Guide

We are looking for someone with knowledge and experience in Astronomy or Astrophysics who can communicate clearly, accurately and engagingly with different audiences.

Training or experience in science communication will be valued, although it is not mandatory. Experience in using telescopes and other astronomical observation equipment is essential, as is a sufficient command of English to conduct entire sessions in the language.

The role includes preparing the equipment and observation areas, welcoming participants and delivering stargazing sessions in Portuguese and English, both at the Official Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory and at other locations where activities or events may be held.

Strong organisational skills, attention to detail and the ability to work independently when preparing and delivering sessions are equally important. The role requires a strong sense of responsibility, care when handling equipment, the ability to adapt to different audiences and circumstances, and excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

We are looking for someone who enjoys engaging with the public and can turn scientific knowledge into an accessible, inspiring and memorable experience, while ensuring scientific accuracy, a high standard of hospitality and compliance with the exacting standards associated with the Dark Sky® brand.

Reservations and Events Support

We are looking for someone to assist with managing reservations, communicating with customers, preparing activities, and organising Dark Sky® events and experiences.

Preference will be given to candidates with qualifications or experience in Tourism, Event Management or Marketing. Strong organisational skills, attention to detail, autonomy and ease of communication are equally important.

The role requires strong spoken and written English skills, as it involves regular communication with international customers and partners. The ability to work effectively as part of a team, manage multiple requests and support every stage in the preparation and delivery of activities will be valued, whether these take place at the Official Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory or at other locations.

Working Conditions and Availability

Both roles involve a 35-hour working week. Given the nature of Dark Sky® activities, working hours include afternoons and evenings and vary between the summer and winter schedules.

The working week may run from Tuesday to Saturday or from Thursday to Sunday, depending on the role, the activities calendar and operational requirements.
