Rural tradition and the skies of Dark Sky® Alqueva near Mina de São Domingos
Just a few metres from the historic village of Mina de São Domingos, in the municipality of Mértola, Monte da Galega is a welcoming agrotourism property where Alentejo hospitality and the tranquillity of the landscape come together to offer an authentic stay in southern Alentejo.
From the very first moment, the warmth and friendliness of the young couple who run the property shape the experience of every guest. With a deep knowledge of the surrounding region, they welcome visitors in a family atmosphere, sharing suggestions and stories that help reveal this territory marked by mining heritage, preserved nature and local culture.
Surrounded by vast plains and holm oak montado landscapes, Monte da Galega blends perfectly into the rural scenery that characterises this part of Lower Alentejo. The house’s decoration, filled with rustic details, constantly reminds guests that they are in the countryside, in a region where simplicity, silence and contact with nature are an essential part of the experience.
The property offers eight spacious and comfortable rooms, designed to ensure rest and tranquillity. All rooms include a private bathroom, air conditioning, television, mini fridge and thermal jug, and some feature a terrace overlooking the Alentejo landscape, allowing guests to contemplate the wide-open horizons of the countryside.
Located within the Dark Sky® Alqueva territory, Monte da Galega benefits from exceptional night sky quality. The region’s low light pollution and the vastness of the surrounding landscape create ideal conditions for observing the Milky Way and thousands of stars with the naked eye, making the night one of the most memorable moments of the stay. As night falls, the silence of the countryside and the purity of the sky invite guests to contemplate one of the most preserved night skies in Europe.
The house also features a shared living room with fireplace, perfect for cooler days, as well as a games room with a snooker table, creating welcoming spaces for relaxing moments with family or friends.
Outside, the estate invites guests to enjoy the surrounding landscape and rural life. Visitors can take walking trails or donkey rides, enjoy the swimming pool or simply relax in the gardens and outdoor areas.
For those wishing to explore the region, just a few minutes away lies the Tapada Grande River Beach, in Mina de São Domingos, one of the most iconic locations in the area. The waters of the former mining exploitation have created a lake that is now one of the most surprising river beaches in Alentejo. The visit can be complemented with the interpretative routes of Mina de São Domingos, which reveal the stories of the miners and the intense industrial activity that once shaped this landscape.
Between nature, heritage and hospitality, Monte da Galega is an invitation to discover the most authentic Alentejo, exploring the landscapes and history of Mina de São Domingos during the day and, at night, contemplating the deep skies of Dark Sky® Alqueva.
