This connection between territory and cosmos is not new. Since the Neolithic period, human communities have attributed meaning to the sky in this region. The abundance of mineral resources and proximity to important river routes favoured early settlement in these lands, where remarkable megalithic remains still endure. Many of these monuments reflect a symbolic reading of the landscape and celestial movements, highlighting the importance of the Sun and the Moon in natural cycles and community life. The sky has always been an integral part of this territory.

At the Official Dark Sky® Alqueva Observatory, in the village of Cumeada, you may take part in guided solar or night observation sessions, complemented by experiences that integrate nature, gastronomy and local identity. Horseback riding, night orientation, night bird watching, lakeside suppers, wine tastings, canoe tours or interpretative walks are just some of the experiences that can be combined within the territory.
