Located in the parish of São Pedro do Corval, recognised as the largest pottery centre in Portugal, Casas de Taipa invite visitors to discover the most authentic side of Alentejo, where tradition, village life and peaceful landscapes come together naturally.
This group of four houses, Casa do Compadre, Casa da Comadre, Casa do Lêntéjo and Casa dos Vizinhos, preserves the character of traditional Alentejo homes, offering visitors the opportunity to experience the rhythm and simplicity of genuine Alentejo life. Set within the village itself and in close contact with the local community, these houses allow guests to experience the culture, traditions and everyday life of the region.
The architecture reflects the identity of traditional Alentejo buildings: single-storey houses with thick walls built in taipa (rammed earth) or masonry, resting on schist foundations and whitewashed with the characteristic coloured baseboards in blue or ochre. The small windows help keep the interior cool during the summer, while the double-pitched roofs, with cane or wooden lining, contribute to thermal insulation. The large chimneys are also a distinctive element of the region’s architectural landscape.
Located just a few kilometres from Monsaraz and the Great Lake Alqueva, and within the Dark Sky® Alqueva territory, Casas de Taipa benefit from a peaceful environment and exceptional night-sky quality. As night falls, the silence of the village and the absence of light pollution create ideal conditions for contemplating the starry sky of Alentejo, one of the most preserved in Europe.
Each house has been designed to provide a comfortable and independent stay, combining the charm of traditional architecture with modern comfort. Among patios, fireplaces and cosy living spaces, guests will find the perfect setting to relax, explore the surrounding landscapes and discover the culture and gastronomy of the region.
Whether for a peaceful getaway, to explore the historical heritage of Monsaraz, to discover the pottery traditions of São Pedro do Corval or to enjoy the starry nights of Dark Sky® Alqueva, Casas de Taipa are an invitation to experience Alentejo in its purest form.
