In the heart of the historic village of Mourão, beside the castle walls and the shores of the Great Lake Alqueva, the houses of Os 5 Sentidos invite guests to experience a stay where heritage, architecture and sensations come together to reveal Alentejo in an authentic way.
More than simple accommodation, these houses offer an experience that awakens the senses: the silence of the landscape, the aromas of the countryside, the texture of stone and limewashed walls, the intense light of Alentejo and, as night falls, the depth of the starry sky of Dark Sky® Alqueva.
Located in the historic centre of Mourão, each house preserves the traditional architectural identity of the village, reinterpreted with contemporary comfort and attention to detail. Both houses operate on an exclusive-use basis, ensuring complete privacy and an ideal environment for families or small groups of friends who wish to explore Alentejo at a relaxed pace.
Their privileged location allows guests to easily discover the heritage of the village, the landscapes of the Great Lake Alqueva and the region’s river beaches, while also enjoying the extraordinary nights provided by one of the most preserved skies in Europe.
A contemporary retreat beneath the Castle of Mourão
With approximately 200 m², Casa dos Sentidos harmoniously combines elements of traditional Alentejo architecture with a contemporary approach to space and interior design.
Located at the foot of the Castle of Mourão and just a few steps from the village centre, the house invites guests to experience Alentejo through the senses. Each double room is dedicated to one of the senses and has its own identity, with stories and details that enrich the stay.
The interior spaces reveal a fusion of tradition and modernity. The fully equipped kitchen allows guests to prepare meals using local products, while the living room invites conviviality and relaxation in a welcoming atmosphere.
Outside, the 100 m² patio, arranged across three terraces carved into schist stone, creates a private and intimate setting. Here, guests can bathe in the small “lagoon” while listening to the cascade, relax beneath the shade of a century-old olive tree, or enjoy a meal outdoors beneath the starry skies of Dark Sky® Alqueva, where the Milky Way appears with remarkable clarity on the clearest nights.
The house also includes a garage prepared for bicycles, making it an ideal base for those who wish to explore the surrounding region through nature routes or cycling paths around the lake.
Memory, tradition and authenticity in the historic centre of Mourão
With approximately 180 m², A Estalagem preserves the atmosphere of a century-old house that reflects the rhythm of rural life in Alentejo. The whitewashed walls, high reed ceilings and handcrafted details reveal the architectural and cultural heritage of those who once lived here.
Located on Rua do Alcance, the house benefits from a privileged location with easy access to the Mourão river beach, allowing guests to combine the tranquillity of the village with moments of leisure by the lake.
As with Casa dos Sentidos, A Estalagem operates on an exclusive-use basis, and its double rooms evoke stories and memories of the region.
The rustic kitchen invites guests to prepare meals using local products and still preserves one of the large traditional ovens used to bake bread in the early 20th century. Nearby, a reading area encourages guests to slow down and enjoy the quiet atmosphere.
Outside, the 80 m² patio includes a small orchard and relaxing outdoor spaces. The old schist table once used during traditional pig slaughtering has now become an outdoor dining table, where guests can savour Alentejo gastronomy while watching the sunset over the Castle of Mourão.
As night falls, the calm atmosphere of the village and the low light pollution make it possible to observe the deep sky of Dark Sky® Alqueva, turning the night into a unique experience of contemplation.
Mourão is part of the Dark Sky® Alqueva territory, the first reserve in the world certified as a Starlight Tourism Destination. In this region, the exceptional quality of the night sky allows visitors to observe thousands of stars and the Milky Way with remarkable clarity.
