Dark Sky® Alqueva Awarded for Global Sustainability Leadership

Today, the Business Intelligence Group awarded Dark Sky® Alqueva/ Associação Dark Sky® with the Sustainability Leadership Award in the 2020 Sustainability Awards program. The Sustainability Awards honor those people, teams and organizations who have made sustainability an integral part of their business practice or overall mission.

In the words of Apolónia Rodrigues, the President of Dark Sky®, “it is a great honor to be able to count on this distinction but it is undoubtedly an award that also carries great responsibility. The concept and brand destination Dark Sky® is being developed since 2007 following an integrated model of sustainable development for destinations and those efforts are being recognized at international level.”

Miguel Claro, the Official Astrophotographer of Dark Sky®, adds: “that these awards and recognitions, will help our hard work behind scenes, in trying to change mindset and open doors, while raising awareness amongst national politicians and world leaders to decrease the growing problem of light pollution, something truly important and the building blocks of our main mission at Dark Sky® Portugal. Only a pristine sky immersed in the beauty of darkness, can reveal the mesmerizing vision of our true Home…the Milky Way Galaxy”

“We are proud to reward and recognize Dark Sky® Alqueva/ Associação Dark Sky® for their sustainability efforts,” said Maria Jimenez, Chief Nominations Officer, Business Intelligence Group. “It was clear to our judges that their vision and strategy will continue to deliver results toward a cleaner, more sustainable world. Congratulations!”

Since the end of last year, Dark Sky® Alqueva has been introducing improvements, reinforcing the sustainable strategy, diversifying the offer of activities and increasing the network of local partners. But the Dark Sky® concept and brand destination has also grown at national level as a result of regional partnerships, thus originating the birth of Dark Sky Aldeias do Xisto in partnership with ADXTUR, and Dark Sky® Vale do Tua in partnership with ADRVT, thus forming with the Dark Sky® Alqueva the Network Dark Sky® PORTUGAL and providing an opportunity for our country as a leading international destination in Astrotourism.
