Dark Sky® Alqueva in the 2020 Sustainable Destinations Top 100

In 2020, Dark Sky® Alqueva reaches the Sustainable Top 100 Destinations in an atypical year where rural destinations achieved and conquered an important role. Tourists needed space, less people around them, more nature and meaningful travels, and Dark Sky® Alqueva with its partners can offer all of that. Since 2007, Dark Sky® Alqueva has been following an integrated model of sustainable development, closely linked to the mission of protecting the night sky. However, sustainability is a path that never ends and is how we understand our work at Dark Sky® Alqueva.

For the sixth time, the Sustainable Top 100 Destinations list is unveiled at the first-ever online Global Green Destinations Days (GGDD). The Sustainable Top 100 Destinations competition is organised to showcase sustainable tourism stories and good practices of destinations, as inspiring examples to others, to tour operators and to travellers. By publishing this annual list and by sharing their destination management good practices and success stories, the initiators acknowledge the steps taken towards making tourism destinations more sustainable, responsible and more attractive from a visitor experience point of view.

Nominations were evaluated by the Sustainable Top 100 Team, country experts and Green Destination Partners, coordinated by Green Destinations. This year, the selection was more than ever determined by the quality, effectiveness and transferability of the Good Practice Stories that were submitted by the destinations.
